Safeguarding Children Policy
My aim is to ensure that every child in my care is safe from harm and abuse at all times. It is my duty to ensure that no child is ever put at risk of abuse whilst in my care and that if I suspect a child is being abused then I must act accordingly.
Every parent /carer will be given a copy of this policy so they are fully aware of my views and responsibilities to safeguard children.
Both myself, my husband and my registered assistant are CRB/ DBS checked, to ensure we are suitable to work with children, and I will never leave the children alone with a person who has not been CRB/DBS checked.
I have attended training on safeguarding children and I am aware of the signs and symptoms of child abuse; physical, sexual, emotional and neglect. I am aware that there may be additional barriers to recognising the signs and symptoms in children with special needs and or disabilities. I will regularly update my safeguarding training so that I have the knowledge required to keep children safe from abuse.
I believe in empowering children to protect them self from abuse. I believe that children should be taught from an early age about privacy, self-respect and standing up for their rights. This will be taught to children in very simple ways as appropriate to their age and development, such as teaching children to pull their own underwear up, and helping children to see what is right and wrong.
If your child has an accident or sustains any injury outside of the child minding setting I request that you inform me so that I can record the details. This is to ensure that any bruising, injuries or marks on your child are explained and protects us all.
Any incident, disclosure, allegation or other cause for concern will be fully recorded and shared with the parent/ carer on the same day (provided this does not put the child at risk of serious harm). I will also inform the parent /carer of any action I intend to take as a result of this event. I will take advice from the area safeguarding advisor, Social Services, Ofsted, and / or the police as necessary.
I will keep an updated safeguarding checklist and contact details so that referrals and advice can be sought quickly and efficiently.
Please note that in cases of suspected abuse the confidentiality policy does not apply and your child’s and family details may be shared if it is in the best interest of your child.
Since I will be alone with the children for significant periods of time, I am vulnerable to allegations. If an allegation is made against myself or my husband I will immediately inform the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) and Ofsted, and follow their guidance. A detailed written record will be kept.
I do use a mobile phone to store parents /carers emergency contact details, and to take photographs of children. I also use a camera to take photographs of children. These are both stored securely and are never given to anyone else to use or store. Photographs of children are taken with prior consent from their parent / carer, and taken for appropriate reason (ie, for their development folder, for photo displays, etc.). Photographs may be downloaded onto my computer for printing/ storing purposes. My computer is password protected to prevent access by anyone other than myself. In the event of disposal of my phone / camera/ computer I will delete all photographs and information on children beforehand.
According to The Prevent Duty, I have a responsibility to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. I have had training in how to recognise and prevent children from the risk of radicalisation and I will follow the government prevent duty guidance to help me to protect the children I child-mind.
