Physical contact policy
Physical contact will be necessary in order to provide good care for young babies and toddlers. Times that I will use physical contact could be:
· To change a child’s nappy
· To wipe their nose or face
· To wipe their bottom when toilet training
· To help them manage their clothing
· To hold their hand when crossing roads, etc.
· To help them to learn a new skill
I always make sure that the child is happy for me to help or care for them, and explain to them what I am doing. The only time I would insist on physical contact would be to ensure a child’s safety and wellbeing.
Any physical contact will be in the child’s interest and this may be an important part of settling, comforting, and building bonds with young children. If your child wants a cuddle when they are upset or wants to sit on my lap to share a story then I am happy to do this. It is important for young children to have physical contact and to learn to show affection appropriately.
Physical restraint
If your child is at risk of harm, or is putting somebody else at risk of harm then it may be necessary for me to restrain them. I will only restrain a child for as long as necessary, and afterwards explain to then the reasons why if this is appropriate.
If this happens I will always discuss the incident with you and record it for you to sign.
