Settling in Policy & Procedure
Being in an unfamiliar place with new people can be upsetting for any child. A supportive and flexible settling in period will help to ease any stress and difficulties your child experiences during this period. This is especially important for a young child who may depend on me to understand their needs and care for them, and may not be able communicate these to me.
Before your child starts I will take time to find out as much as I can about them. I will ask you to tell me about their routines, diet, any medical needs, what they like doing and playing with, their development and abilities. This will help me to know how to best care for them and to plan and provide activities they will enjoy.
I will ask you to bring your child for some settling in visits before they start so they can begin familiarising themselves with my home and the other children. This will also help me to get to know them before they start. You will not be charged for settling in visits.
During the early days of a child settling in I welcome telephone calls to find out how they are doing. If your child is very distressed for a period of time I will let you know, so you are aware and can make a decision about whether to collect them earlier than planned. I ask parents not to “pop in” during settling periods as this can be very confusing for your child, and can prolong their settling.
When you come to collect your child I will give you feedback about their day.
